Arts in the Natural World: Observe Your Environment

August-June

Learn how to document nature from an artist’s perspective. From the colors and textures in our gardens, to the vibrancy of the artwork in the Arts Center, and to the sounds and smells on our trails, this program will tap into your students’ senses as they slow down and observe their environment. Programs in the Arts in the Natural World series seek to demonstrate intersections between the arts and the world around us.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • VA.5.2CR Investigate ideas and inform artmaking through available resources.
  • DN.5.3PE Demonstrate leadership when working alone, with partners, and in small groups, to improvise and solve movement problems
  • MUS.5.3CO Explain how the elements and subject matter of music connect with other subject areas.
  • VA.5.2PE Develop technical skills to strengthen artmaking.

      The Notion of Motion

      August-June

      We dance through life everyday. Discover some of the science behind how our bodies move, and explore how dance and community are integral building blocks in history and culture. This program’s kinesthetic nature will build confidence, collaborative skills, and expression through the lens of dance history, theory, and kinesiology.

      Fine Arts Standards:

      • DN.5.1CR Use formal and informal movement studies during choreography and improvisation.
      • DN.5.3CR Apply and combine the elements of dance to express ideas, feelings, moods, and personal narratives.
      • DN.5.3PE Demonstrate leadership when working alone, with partners, and in small groups, to improvise and solve movement problems.
      • DN.5.2CO Recognize and describe features of dance forms and how they represent historical and cultural contexts.

      Ohio Science Standards:

      • 5.PS.1 The amount of change in movement of an object is based on the mass of the object and the amount of force exerted.

      Ohio Social Studies Standards:

      • SS.5.10 The Western Hemisphere is culturally diverse (eg., language, food, religion, art, music) due to the influences and interactions of a variety of world cultures.

      The Show Must Go On!

      August-June

      Putting on a show is a collaborative masterpiece that encourages an array of creative skills. For example, technical artists design sets, props, and lighting, while performing artists bring the story to life with their voice, body, and imagination. Join us at the Greenacres Arts Center to explore the artful thought that goes into every aspect of a performance!

      Fine Arts Standards:

      • TH.4.1PE Manipulate voice, movement, space, design, and physical objects to communicate thoughts, feelings, and ideas in both improvised and scripted activities.
      • TH.4.1RE Explain, through appropriate theatrical vocabulary, how manipulation of technical elements brings about changes in performances.

      Ohio English Language Arts:

      • ELA.4.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal precise actions, emotions, or states of being (e.g., quizzed, whined, stammered) and that are basic to a particular topic (e.g., wildlife, conservation, and endangered when discussing animal preservation).

      The Sounds of Cinema

      August-June

      Sound is an important part of our everyday lives. Learn about how the art of sound enhances all other art forms and how most forms of media would fall short without it! Spend the day learning the ways of a Foley Artist as we engineer our own sound effects for film.

      • MUS.4.3RE Compare and contrast elements of music using developmentally appropriate vocabulary.
      • MUS.4.1CO Discuss the connection between emotion and music in selected musical works using elements of music.
