Equine Energy Flow (7th Grade)

August-June

Within a natural system, the transfer of energy drives the motion and/or cycling of matter. Students will design a horse farm and explore the types of energy and energy transfers to determine the most efficient management practices.

Ohio Science Standards:

  • 7.PS.2 – Matter can be separated or changed, but in a closed system, the number and types of atoms remains constant.
  • 7.PS.3 – Energy can be transformed or transferred but is never lost.
  • 7.PS.4 – Energy can be transferred through a variety of ways.
  • 7.LS.1 – Energy flows and matter is transferred continuously from one organism to another and between organisms and their physical environments.
  • 7.LS.2 – In any particular biome, the number, growth and survival of organisms and populations depend on biotic and abiotic factors.

Vocabulary:

matter, conservation, system, mechanical energy, elastic potential energy, electrical potential energy, chemical energy, gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, photosynthesis, transform, transfer

Cells to Body Systems; Horse Edition (6th Grade)

August-June

Cells make up everything from horses to hay.  Students will explore cells, body systems, and more on the farm through hands-on equine experiences.

Ohio Science Standards:

  • 6.LS.1 Cells are the fundamental unit of life.
  • 6.LS.2 All cells come from pre-existing cells.
  • 6.LS.3 Cells carry on specific functions that sustain life.
  • 6.LS.4 Living systems at all levels of organization demonstrate the complementary nature of structure and function.

Vocabulary:

plant cell, animal cell, mitosis, cell division, tissue, organ, body systems, traits, homeostasis, respiratory, digestive, circulatory, muscular, chromosomes, multi-cellular, DNA

Arts in the Natural World Series: Exploring Natural Materials

August-Oct; March 15th-June

Nature provides endless inspiration for expression. Be prepared to get your hands dirty as we experiment with natural materials and our creativity! Programs in the Arts in the Natural World series seek to demonstrate intersections between the arts and the world around us. This program only operates in warmer months (August-October 31; March 15-June). All multi-grade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

Vocabulary:

nature, resources, imagination, inspiration

Arts in the Natural World: Observe Your Environment

August-June

Learn how to document nature from an artist’s perspective. From the colors and textures in our gardens, to the vibrancy of the artwork in the Arts Center, and to the sounds and smells on our trails, this program will tap into your students’ senses as they slow down and observe their environment. Programs in the Arts in the Natural World series seek to demonstrate intersections between the arts and the world around us. All multi-grade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

Vocabulary:

documentation, observation, environment, senses
