Mass and Movement

August-June

Horses are acted upon by forces and exert forces on other objects.  Students will gain hands-on experience measuring speed and studying the forces that affect our horses.

Ohio Math Standards:

  • 5.PS.1 The amount of change in movement of an object is based on the mass of the object and the amount of force exerted.
  • 5.PS.1.a Movement can be measured by speed. The speed of an object is calculated by determining the distance (d) traveled in a period of time (t).
  • 5.PS.1.b Any change in speed or direction of an object requires a force and is affected by the mass of the object and the amount of force applied.

    Conversions in Horse Care

    August-June

    Measurements and conversions are a pivotal part of horse care from feed to speed. Students will measure anything from concentrations in horse food and water to the height of horses and convert them into the units we need to understand them.

    Ohio Math Standards:

    • 5.MD.1 Know relative sizes of these U.S. customary measurement units: pounds, ounces, miles, yards, feet, inches, gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, hours, minutes, and seconds. Convert between pounds and ounces; miles and feet; yards, feet, and inches; gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces; hours, minutes, and seconds in solving multi-step, real-world problems.
    • 5.MD.2 Display and interpret data in graphs (picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots) to solve problems using numbers and operations for this grade, e.g., including U.S. customary units in fractions 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or decimals.

      Patterns Around Us

      August-June

      Patterns are a part of our everyday lives and help us make sense of the world! Join us at Greenacres Arts Center to search for and create our own patterns through the visual and performing arts. Parts of this program change with the season, so there is always something new to explore! This program is ideal for students ages 5-9. All multi-grade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

      Shapes & Designs

      August-June

      The 1920s English Norman Style architecture of Greenacres Arts Center is a playground for inspiration and for uncovering the beauty and utility of patterns in artwork and architecture. Through organic and geometric shapes hidden in every corner, students will search for designs to inspire their own work of art.

      Fine Arts Standards:

      • VA.5.2CR Investigate ideas and inform artmaking through available resources.
      • VA.5.3CR Select and use the elements of art and principles of design to investigate interdisciplinary concepts.
      • VA.5.2PE Develop technical skills to strengthen artmaking.
      • VA.5.3PE Communicate an interdisciplinary concept using the elements of art and principles of design.

      Ohio Math Standards:

      • Critical Area 5 Classifying two-dimensional figures by properties.

      Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

      • SEL.A4.2.b Demonstrate confidence in the ability to complete a range of tasks and address challenges while expressing positive attitudes towards self.
