Self-Expression Through Storytelling

August-June

Artists produce memorable works of art from their interpretations of the world around them. Experience how stories are shared through art, music, and theatre, and how you can use that knowledge to develop your own storytelling style.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • VA.3.1PE Observe and compare similar themes, subject matter and images in artworks from historical and contemporary eras.
  • TH.3.2PR Use voice, movement, and space to communicate a storyline and a character’s thoughts, feelings and ideas.
  • MUS.3.6RE Compare interpretations of the same piece of music as they occur through dance, drama and visual art.

Ohio English Language Arts Standards:

  • ELA.SL.3.2 Determine the main ideas and supporting details of a text read aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.A1. 1.b Identify a range of personal emotions.

From Story to Stage

August-June

Storytelling is best known from the pages of a book. Visit the Arts Center to become a part of the transformation from words on a page into acting on the stage. Full of characters and creativity, test your imagination with performance, and bring new life to telling a story.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • TH.1PR Create movements and voices of characters to communicate feelings and ideas in dramatic or theatrical contexts (e.g., skits, puppetry, pantomime, improvisation and storytelling).
  • TH.2PR Explore and demonstrate various design components of a scene (e.g., draw a picture from the stories, create live sound effects and identify clothing items appropriate to the character).

Ohio English Language Arts Standards:

  • ELA.RL.2.5 Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.E4. 1.a Recognize that new opportunities may have positive outcomes
  • SEL.E4. 2.a Identify physical and emotional responses to unfamiliar situations

Patterns

August-June

Patterns are all around us. They help us make sense of things, including the Arts. Join us at Greenacres as we search for and create our own patterns through Art, Theatre, and Music! This program is inspired by the season we are in, so there is always something new to explore!

Fine Arts Standards:

  • MU.6PR Play a variety of classroom instruments, alone and with others, and demonstrate proper technique.
  • VA.7PE Generate artmaking ideas from their daily experiences and the environment.
  • TH.2.1PR Create movements and voices of characters to communicate feelings and ideas in dramatic or theatrical contexts (e.g., skits, puppetry, pantomime, improvisation and storytelling).

Ohio Math Standards:

  • G.2.1 Recognize and identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, and hexagons based on the number of sides or vertices. Recognize and identify cubes, rectangular prisms, cones, and cylinders.
  • MP.2.7 Look for and make use of structure.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.A4. 2.a Demonstrate confidence in the ability to complete simple tasks and challenges independently, while expressing positive attitudes towards self

    Arts in the Natural World Series: Exploring Natural Materials

    August-June

    Nature provides endless inspiration for expression. Be prepared to get your hands dirty as we experiment with natural materials and our creativity! Programs in the Arts in the Natural World Series seek to demonstrate intersections between the arts and the world around us. This program only operates in warmer months (August-October 31; March 15-June).

    All multigrade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

    Ohio Social Studies Standards:

    • SS.2.8 Cultures develop in unique ways, in part through the influence of the physical environment.

    Ohio Science Standards:

    • Sci.2.LS.1 Living things cause changes on Earth.

    NGSS Standards:

    • 2-PS1-1 Matter and Its Interactions: Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
