Bring a Book to Life: Hatchet

August-June

The young adult novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is the story of how Brian survives on his own after a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness. Students will experience some of Brian’s adventures through hands-on survival skills and knowledge. Students should have completed reading this novel prior to their field trip. This program may also be completed in a series, with each field trip focusing on a different aspect of the novel.

Ohio Language Arts Standards:

  • RL.4.2 Analyze literary text development. a. Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text. b. Summarize the text, incorporating a theme determined from details in the text.
  • RL.4.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).
  • RL.4.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, in the grades 4–5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Activate prior knowledge and draw on previous experiences in order to make text-to-self or text-to-text connections and comparisons.

Greenacres excitedly welcomes the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Opera, and Cincinnati Ballet each fall for a spectacular performance chronicling miraculous talents all on one stage. John Morris Russel, beloved conductor of the Cincinnati Pops, serves as our guide throughout a live art experience that compares to none. Limited dates and seats are available.

Performing Arts in Action

August-June

The Performing arts come to life through engagement between the performers and the audience. At Greenacres Arts Center, you can try out both roles. Some types of performances have movement and dance, some have actors and a set, and others have instruments and music. All you need to succeed at Greenacres is an open mind and a pinch of bravery! This program is easily customizable for 6th, 7th, or 8th grade arts and core standards.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • DN.6.7.2CR Create a movement study using stimuli (music, observed dance, literary forms, notation, natural phenomena, personal experience).
  • DN.6.7.8.2PE Demonstrate kinesthetic awareness of the expressive body as it moves and feels in relation to the elements of dance.
  • MUS.6.6PE Maintain simple, four- and eight-beat rhythmic ostinati with a recorded accompaniment.
  • TH.6.6CR Engage in ensemble-building activities to build character, emotion, mood, and tone.

English Language Arts Standards:

  • ELA.RL.8.3 Analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision.

Entertainment and Expression

Art and music have an important and long-lasting relationship with entertainment. Join us as we explore the many ways that art and music cross disciplines. This program places a strong emphasis on the art of sound and its role in the film industry. This program is easily adaptable to suit 6th, 7th, or 8th grade arts and core standards.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • VA.6.2PE Discover and articulate how the media forms of the day use art and images to communicate messages and meaning
  • MU.6.6CE Describe roles and skills musicians assume in various cultures and settings.
  • MU.6.4RE Describe ways that music relates to other art forms using appropriate terminology.

Ohio English Language Standards:

  • SL.6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
