Sing High, Sing Low: Musical Opposites

August-June

Life is full of opposites, like happy or sad, warm or cold, and big or small. Join us for an adventure as we explore opposites through music! Go fast and slow as we follow tempo, get loud and quiet as we explore dynamics, feel long and short sounds as we make rhythms, and hear highs and lows as we experience pitch.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • MUS.K.3RE Recognize same and different (fast/slow, loud/quiet, high/low, long/short).
  • MUS.K.1CR Experience a wide variety of vocal and instrumental sounds.
  • MUS.K.1PE Track steady beat and rhythm (using graphic, iconic, or traditional notation).

Ohio English Language Arts:

  • ELA.K.5.b Demonstrate understanding of frequently occurring verbs and adjectives by relating them to their antonyms (opposites).
  • ELA.K.5.d Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs describing the same general action (e.g., walk, march, strut, prance) by acting out the meanings.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.A2.2.a Explore opportunities to develop skills and talents.

Exploring the Colors of the Rainbow

August-June

Explore the color wheelā€™s primary and secondary colors with the Greenacres Arts Educators! We will discover how colors can inspire us, and how colors can connect to and reflect our emotions.

  • DN.K.1RE Describe how movements can express feelings.
  • MUS.K.1CO Experience how music communicates feelings, moods, images, and meaning.

Taking the Stage

Take center stage at the Arts Center and put your creative instincts to practice! Through music and theatre, work with your classmates to discover performance techniques that can be valuable in many areas of life, and find the pride to star in a final performance.

  • DN.HSP.1PE Perform movement studies demonstrating expression and clarity of intent.
  • MUS.ENN.7PE Recognize and describe how to refine individual and ensemble performances of varied repertoire in a rehearsal setting.

    Improv 101

    August-June

    We all have an inner critic in our minds that tries to bring us down. Through the art of improvisation, we strengthen our inner championā€“ empowering the ways we can encourage ourselves. Improvisation is rooted in open-mindedness, listening deeply to others, and trusting your own instinctsā€“skills that serve us in every avenue of life. Test out your acting skills and see how easily you can come up with a joke, all while having fun and building confidence with classmates.

    Fine Arts Standards:

    • TH.5.1PE Work cooperatively in different roles or jobs within a dramatic and theatrical experience.
    • TH.5.4RE Identify and critique the elements that impede a performer’s effectiveness.
    • TH.5.1CO Brainstorm the modes of presentation (film, television, live theatre, improv, vlog) that most effectively elicit thoughts and feelings from a contemporary audience.

    • ELA.SL.5.4 Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
