Arts Appreciation Series: Visual Art

August-June

Art evokes reactions. Do you ever find yourself liking or disliking a work of art, but you struggle to articulate why? Students will don the hat of “art critic” in this immersive program as we seek to build our art appreciation toolkit. Programs in the Arts Appreciation Series encourage students to practice their communication skills, particularly oral communication, through intentional opportunities for speaking about and engaging with the arts and each other.

All multigrade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • VA.3.1PE Observe and compare similar themes, subject matter and images in artworks from historical and contemporary eras.
  • VA.3.5PR Show increasing attention to the nuances of elements and principles of design when creating personal works of art.
  • VA.3.3RE Compare and contrast their opinions of a work of art with those of their peers.
  • VA.3.1RE Examine and describe how art and design principles are used by artists to create visual effects.

Ohio English Language Arts Standards:

  • ELA.SL.3.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Ohio Social Studies Standards:

  • SS.GS.3.8 Communities may include diverse cultural groups.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.C1. 2.b Identify and acknowledge others’ viewpoints, knowing that both sides do not have to agree but can still be respectful

Arts Appreciation Series: Music

This program provides time for your students to immerse themselves in the world of music. Exploring different musical genres, styles, and experiences students will have a hands-on learning experience designed to cultivate an appreciation for music in their lives. Programs in the Arts Appreciation Series encourage students to practice their communication skills, particularly oral communication, through intentional opportunities for speaking about and engaging with the arts and each other.

All multigrade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • MUS.2.1RE Explain how music is used for a variety of purposes and occasions.
  • MUS.2.3CE Listen to and identify music of various styles, composers, periods and cultures.

Ohio English Language Arts Standards:

  • ELA.SL.2.4 Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Ohio Social Studies Standards:

  • SS.GS.2.9 Interactions among cultures lead to sharing ways of life.

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.A2. 1.a Identify personal interests and qualities.
  • SEL.B3. 2.a Explain how practice improves performance of a skill and can help in overcoming a challenge or setback.

Meditative Arts

August-June

Using tools and practices centered around creativity, experience the calming effects of art, music, and mindful movement. This program focuses on the “whole person”–mind, body, and creative spirit–as we empower students with self-regulation strategies.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • TH.2.4PR Engage in physical warm-ups to develop relaxation and build coordination and flexibility.
  • MU.2.1RE Explain how music is used for a variety of purposes and occasions.
  • VA.2.4PR Demonstrate flexibility in their creative processes and use of art materials.

Physical Education Standards:

  • Phys.Ed.2.2 Perform combinations of locomotor, non-locomotor, weight transfer and static and dynamic balance skills

Social and Emotional Learning Standards:

  • SEL.B1. 3.a Identify and begin to use strategies to regulate emotions and manage behaviors

Arts in the Natural World Series: Ephemeral Art

March – October

Ephemeral Art, or Environmental Art, is all about how we can create art outside that leaves no negative environmental impact. Immerse yourself in the natural world and discover how to use your surroundings to create art with mediums you may not have considered before. Programs in the Arts in the Natural World Series seek to demonstrate intersections between the arts and the world around us. This program only operates in warmer months (August-October 31; March 15-June).

 All multigrade program offerings will be supported by grade-level appropriate standards, available to share upon request.

Fine Arts Standards:

  • VA.1.3RE Share their artmaking processes with peers.
  • VA.1.2PR Invent imagery and symbols to express thoughts and feelings.

  • SS.Gov.1.9 Collaboration requires group members to respect the rights and opinions of others.
