Raised on Pasture
At Greenacres, we raise our hogs with care, commitment, and a focus on sustainability. Several times a year, young weaned piglets arrive and are raised entirely outdoors in a combination of pastures and woodlands, where they have the freedom to roam, root, and forage—just as nature intended. Unlike commercially raised hogs, ours thrive in a pasture-based system that allows them to express their natural behaviors, keeping them healthy and stress-free until harvest. By combining humane practices, generative agriculture, and attention to every detail, we produce pork that is not only delicious but also a reflection of our dedication to responsible farming.

A Natural, Balanced Diet
Hogs are natural foragers, thriving on a diverse diet that supports their health and well-being. At Greenacres, our hogs spend their days rooting through pastures and woodlands, sampling a variety of plants, nuts, and other natural foods. This foraging is essential for their physical and mental enrichment, allowing them to engage in their natural behaviors. To ensure they receive all the nutrients necessary for optimal growth, we supplement their diet with a locally produced, free-choice feed. This balanced approach, combined with fresh air and ample exercise, results in robust, healthy hogs and high-quality pork with superior flavor and texture.
Responsible Farming
Our commitment to ethical and sustainable farming is evident in the way we raise our hogs. They live in spacious, fenced enclosures that allow them to roam freely while staying protected from predators. Open-sided portable shelters provide relief from the elements, ensuring the hogs are comfortable in all seasons while maintaining their outdoor lifestyle. As they grow, we prioritize low-stress handling practices to support their well-being. In preparation for harvest, we introduce a trailer into their enclosure a week before transport, gradually moving their feed and water inside. This allows the hogs to enter and exit freely, becoming accustomed to the space, which minimizes stress and ensures a humane transition. These thoughtful practices contribute to both the health of the animals and the exceptional quality of the pork we produce.

Selecting the Best Breeds
To provide the highest quality product while ensuring our hogs thrive in a pasture-based system, we are trialing several heritage and crossbreeds. Red Wattles are known for their rich, well-marbled meat, while Red Wattle-Hampshire crosses combine hardiness with excellent meat quality. Idaho Pasture Hogs, a breed developed specifically for pasture-raising, produce tender, flavorful pork, and Berkshire hogs are prized for their juicy, highly marbled meat. We prioritize sourcing our piglets from local breeders who share our commitment to ethical and sustainable farming. By working with responsible regional farms, we ensure our hogs are well-suited to our system while supporting the local agricultural community. At Greenacres, we take pride in raising hogs in a way that respects both the animal and the land, delivering pork that is not only delicious but also produced with care and integrity.
